3LD / 3D+
3LD/3D+ is a new production, distribution, and documentation system for experimental artwork.
This system combines a well-known domestic and international live art touring circuit with the broad reach of digital media in an attempt to produce a new business model and new opportunities for contemporary performance. Each production selected for the 3LD/ 3D+ program will go through a cross platform development process and documented in stereoscopic 3D. The live productions will be moved through an existing live touring circuit and also distributed through an international network of digital & 3D movie theaters, broadcast cable and satellite channels, video-on-demand services and digital download platforms.

The first completed 3LD/3D+ production is Jim Findlay's BOTANICA, which opened in February 2012 and ran for 21 well-attended performances at 3LD Art & Technology Center. A creepy futuristic black comedy where morals, ethics, and consequences unravel along with the human sense of mastery, BOTANICA featured performers Liz Sargent, Ilan Bachrach, and Chet Mazur. The premiere was designed by Peter Ksander and Jeff Sugg and co-written by Findlay and Jeff Jackson with sound design by Jamie McElhinney. The New York Times said of the production, “Like the lustful plants that end up calling the shots, BOTANICA grows on you.” The work was filmed in its entirety in 3D HD by our ongoing partner the NHK Cosmomedia America.
Editing is complete and 3-Legged Dog is currently working on several major exhibition and festival opportunities for future 3D showings of the work. BOTANICA will premiere on Tendu TV a New York City-based online broadcasting and digital distribution company in September 2012.
Completed Work: BOTANICA
BOTANICA was developed during a five-month residency in our space, where artists created the elaborately designed terrarium, incorporating interactive video, sound and kinetic cues. The development of BOTANICA exemplifies the unprecedented role our space plays in the creation of large-scale, multimedia productions, by providing artists with the time and resources they need to implement their designs to the scale of their imaginations rather than the bottom line. Funds from The Rockefeller Cultural Innovation Fund and from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/ New York Foundation for the Arts New York Theater Program, contributed directly to this residency.
Completed Work: Charlie Victor Romeo | OFFICIAL SELECTION OF THE 2013 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL
The second work to be produced as part of 3LD/3D+ is the acclaimed production of Charlie Victor Romeo by Collective Unconscious. This award-winning performance of black box recordings from fatal airline disasters originally premiered at Collective:Unconscious and is named one of Time Magazine’s Best Plays of 2004. It also won the 2000 Drama Desk Award and the 2000-2001 cycle Defense Department Visual Communications Award. Collective:Unconscious remounted the production in residency at 3LD this past summer. Charlie Victor Romeo was filmed in its entirety by NHK in 3D HD for distribution in 2013.
In Development: Paris Orgy and Love Racer
Additionally, projects in development as part of 3LD/3D+ received workshops in FY12 including Paris Orgy by Chuck Mee, directed by Kevin Cunningham In Paris Orgy, looking through the lenses of multiple 3D cameras into the braided topography of Paris, 3-Legged Dog constructs a complete world using surround stereoscopic 3D projection and shaped sound. Paris Orgy creates an encompassing, multilingual environment in which audience and performers mesh in quasi-fictional reality, simultaneously erotic and sublime. Paris Orgy enjoyed a three-week rehearsal and technology residencies at 3LD in 2012. As we shoot footage for the immersive performance we will also be capturing footage for the full-length 3D feature film.
In addition with support of the Danish Arts Agency, artistic director and multi-media director and programmer Mark Coniglio travelled to the Click Festival at our partner Culture Yard in Elsinor DK to complete a design and interactive workshop for the first Danish/American production in the 3LD/3D+ program, Neils Ronsholdt and Signe Kleis’s LoveRacer. LoveRacer is a journey into the epicenter of love. In LoveRacer, the artist and audience investigate different aspects of intimacy and intensity through music, sound, visuals, space, interactivity and performance.
During the Summer of 2013 3-Legged Dog artistic staff will return to Culture Yard for design and technical residencies that will follow up on the 2012 residency. The producing teams from Culture Yard and 3-Legged Dog will also participate in strategy and planning meetings to strengthen and broaden our collaboration.
In addition we will screen Botanica in 3D at the Click Festival.
